time is flying by... today marks 8 weeks for me...
here is okaasan showing us how to make homemade red bean mochi
mochi goes in everything. we had plain mochi, mochi in soup, mochi with diakon and soy sauce, and, finally, sweet mochi
there is some sort of performance everyday on campus...
last friday we went on a field trip to a textile factory north of Kyoto by Lake Biwa where we saw them paste paper onto velvet to create this beautiful aged looking material
the cloth selection was to die for
this vending machine at a bus stop has a tv in it
little winding river
traditional tea house with zen garden
mel and the smallest cup of 5 dollar coffee
Aoi Matsuri Festival, Kyoto's largest festival- they have a large parade where people are dressed in traditional Heian period costumes and they march through the streets, stopping at temples to perform ceramonies. We only caught a small part at the Shimogamo-jinji Temple
horses running (thats it, they really didn't do much more as far as we could tell)
a kabuki performance

on sunday, susan and I went to Kobe to meet up with a friend of a friend of hers. We spent most of the day by the harbor, avoiding the crowds and watching bands perform

and then used the material to wrap susan

"the cloth selection was to die for"...the dorkiness that is Kyra Joy never ceases to crack me up. I like the mochi video too. I'm surprised in all my talking of food I forgot to mention mochi. Most americans only know the mochi ice cream but they eat it a lot and its kinda a bitch to make. I have this funny feeling that I understood far more of your clip then you did...it sounded oddly like a day at work. And as always, I love the little clips of your conversation that were recorded at the same time. "She's throwin em at us..."
Its cool to see some of what your working on too. You just post pictures of the kimono deconstruction, or were they shots from the video?
i like homemade mochi, the stuff in the stores is just to processed, it is almost plastic like. in years past okaasan would actullay prepare it the traditional way by beating the rice with a large mallet, but now they have a handy little machine that does it for us... oh and i forgot to mention that a few nights after that we had a takoyaki party where we all got to grill our own little octopus balls... good fun
as for my project- those are just a few of the pics, i have it all on video as well
kyra,
what is your address so i can send you stuff?
